I’ve often been had reservations on New Year’s resolutions, for the simple fact that I over do my plans and plan WAY more than I can possibly accomplish. So I was hesitant to make them again this year. But I think instead of making great lists of what I’ll do, perhaps a perspective change is in order. So I will resolve to:
- Slow down and enjoy things! Don’t try to take the world on in one hour. Keep to-do lists smaller. Don’t have too many things to do in a day and depress myself by not getting it all done. Don’t run run run and forget that I need to take time for people - for people are more important than things. Savor moments - food, time with loved ones, hobby time, … (How I will work on this? Not quite sure yet. This isn’t an action plan kind of goal. Will have to think on it as this goal goes against part of my nature.)
- Do SMALL things. Instead of planning to declutter the whole house this year. I’ll work at small de-cluttering jobs that work toward a cleaner house.
- Renew relationships. I tend to work on projects rather than reach out to people. Put a couple days on the calendar to visit. Spend more time in God’s word. (Every time I say I’ll try to do this every day, I start to feel resentful about “having” to do it. So I’ll focus on it like resolution #1 - slow down and enjoy.) Just be with family more. We tend to be around each other but not do things together.
- Preschool. Work with daughter on colors, shapes and numbers. This will give us just some us time too. Get her into preschool this fall.
- Hobby improvement. Learn to appliqué and maybe sew from a pattern. (Does it sound dumb that I fear patterns?) Learn to use an off-camera flash with a remote, and re-start the Strobist lighting “workshops”. (Got interrupted when life threw us some blows last year.)
I saw the following quote on “I’m an Organizing Junkie” and I felt the first two especially fit and influenced my thoughts above.
Peace: What are some ways that you bring peace in your relationships? How do you create a peaceful atmosphere? This category includes your spiritual life.
Order: What are simple things you do to create quick order in your daily life? It can be cleaning, organizing, sheduling, budgeting etc.
Beauty: How do you bring beauty into your home in ways that please the senses? What are things you do to make your home feel good?
So what did I do in 2007?
- Well, the first thing that pops into my head was that I took pretty darn good portraits of my kids this year. I actually needed a “release” to get them printed.
Setting up a little studio has been quite a bit of fun. - Organized our closets. Shelving systems in the closets helped tremendously. Our rooms are much easier to keep clean.
- Re-realized that I need to get beyond a few things in the past (some good, some bad). I need to focus more on the here and now and future. The past is good to learn from but not dwell in. It’s a stagnant place.
- Became closer with my son. Spent more time with him and being there for him.
- Kept evening commitments to a pretty reasonable level. With camera club, scouts, church (not just going but volunteering in several areas), a little “crafters anonymous” group, and helping in school it adds up really quick.
Not bad for a crazy year. Feels good to write the accomplishments down too.
On a completely different note: the Wii is a blast. I never thought I’d like bowling and it’s my favorite of the Sports games. Latest book read (just finished yesterday): “Making Money” by Terry Pratchett. What a hoot! (Although you HAVE to read “Going Postal” before it, which is a tiny bit better.)
