Bento Box Prelim – Ok I’m a believer now…

Size of the bento box halves
Skeptical is how I felt today as I packed my little bento box for a preliminary run for my lunch. I’d read that I needed about a 600ml box and if filled “properly” (varying your foods and having a specific balance so it limits calories) that it will contain about that many calories. Salad plate size lunches are what I’ used to, but this seemed even smaller somehow.

Lunch! (Cashews, one of the last slices of mom's apricot bread, baby bel cheese, pear quarter, pb on whole wheat tortilla, baby cut carrots)
I suspect there’s more than 600 calories there with the bread, nuts, cheese, tortilla and pb. But I used what I had on hand. (Mottainai! ~ Don’t waste.)
My suspicions were proved wrong. I couldn’t quite finish it all and I’m not sure I need a snack. (But coffee is a must today!) Thumbs up to this little portion control and Japan-o-phile lunch box.
What I’m noticing as I’m learning to pack more of a bento style lunch is there’s many different things in the lunch – just smaller portions than the average American would pack.

Wow, I miss the bento boxes. I lived in Japan for a year (2005/06). I lost so much weight, as did every other foreign make I knew. For some reason, though, Western women put weight on. A couple of them told me it was to do with carb cravings. Don’t know why they would necessarily be worse in Japan but I make it a rule not to question such things. Can you explain?
Thanks for the reminder!
Tom
Sorry, I can provide no explanations. I’m land locked in the middle of the states. When I get to Japan (looking like several years from now), I’ll see if I can answer. (I’d better not gain weight over there!)
