Organizing Round Up: The Craft Area

October 24, 2008
by avlor

Usually I’m just itching to start an organizing project.  But I had a hard time getting going on this month’s Organizing Round Up hosted by “I’m an Organizing Junkie.”  This month has been crazy and I wasn’t sure where to start in this chaotic room of MY SCHTUFF.

Sorting – it’s where I had to start.  I worked on the bigest problem areas – photography gear, WIPs (had to look it up the other day, so I’ll provide the link), and Spinning Do-Dads.

Photography Gear and Wizmos:

  • Peared down my stuff a bit.  (I think I will put the huge Tamarac photo gear bag on ebay.  I like my other bag more.)
  • Put my less often used tidbits in lined cd box with pockets.  The pockets hold the little stuff that gets lost in the bottom of the crate.  (See directions here.)
  • Moved ALL photo gear out of the cupboards.  It’s sitting on open shelves or hanging up – so I can see it and remember I have it.
  • Rolled all the PVC Tinker Tubes widgets into fabric tubes that tie up.  (This tube tying style is from a Japanese idea called furoshiki.  The tying methods I used are the 3rd from right on top row and the 3rd from the left on the bottom row from these directions.)   My Tinker Tubes used to be in a plastic bin and it was impossible to find all the pieces with out dumping it out. Now each thing is in it’s own fabric tube and I know where the pieces are.

WIP and Etsy Items

  • Put in former photo gear cupboard to keep my counter clean!
  • Put the ready to ship Etsy items in separate container.

Spinning Do-Dads:

  • Reduced stash of spindles by 3.
  • Gave the spinning wheel accessories a box.
  • Moved the shelf up a notch to make room for binders to stand.
  • Tried to order things on shelves by most use.

I also tackled the CDs in the end table.

Great work with the music CDs! My wife and decided to ditch all of the movie DVD cases and instead place all of our DVDs in large DVD albumns. The albums are heavy duty and hold eight DVDs per page (four front and four back). You can get nearly 100 DVDs in a single book. Not only is easier to store, but finding movies is is a cinch since have one book for kids movies and one for non-kid movies.

Now, aren’t you glad you overcame the inertia and just got it done? It looks nice, and now you will be able to remember what you have. I love being able to do that! I’ll have to go check out your etsy shop!

Sometimes it’s the little things that you can do to make things way more functional. Glad you got your motivation to get it done!
